The current centuries old classification of the family Nephtheidae is still mostly based on colony morphology. In this family the Indo-Pacifc genera Litophyton, Nephthea, Dendronephthya and Stereonephthya, and the Atlantic genus Neospongodes form a complex mix of closely related, poorly described species which cannot be recognized using only colony morphology. Attempts with the more modern approach of comparing skeleton composition (sclerites) have been only partly successful because of the extreme variation of sclerite forms present in these genera. The genus Chromonephthea Van Ofwegen, 2005, introduced for several species previously assigned to Dendronephthya, Nephthea and Stereonephthya, was established with sclerite morphology, but the true generic... |

Lohowia koosi, a new species and new genus in the family Alcyoniidae, is described from Lord Howe Island, Australia. The new taxon has dimorphic polyps and a similar morphology to some of the flat, lobe-less nominal species of Lobophytum. The new taxon is clearly distinguished, however, by the possession of large, heavily armed autozooids, polypary surface sclerites in the form of large spindles that protrude through the surface, extremely large interior sclerites and base surface sclerites in the form of rods, spindles and ovals. |

A list of 46 species of Alcyonacea is presented for the coral reefs of the Segundas Archipelago and northwards in Mozambique, as well as a zoogeographical record for the Bazaruto Archipelago in southern Mozambique. Among the 12 genera listed, Rhytisma, Lemnalia and Briareum were recorded on Mozambican reefs for the first time and the study yielded 27 new zoogeographical records. The survey brings the number of soft coral species listed for Mozambique to a total of 53. A latitudinal pattern in soft coral diversity along the south equatorial East African coast is presented, with 46 species recorded in Tanzania, 46 along the northern coast of Mozambique, dropping to 29 in the Bazaruto Archipelago in southern Mozambique and rising again to 38 along the... |

Coral reefs host hundreds of thousands of animal species that are increasingly threatened by anthropogenic disturbances. These animals host microbial communities at their surface, playing crucial roles for their fitness. However, the diversity of such microbiomes is mostly described in a few coral species and still poorly defined in other invertebrates and vertebrates. Given the diversity of animal microbiomes, and the diversity of host species inhabiting coral reefs, the contribution of such microbiomes to the total microbial diversity of coral reefs could be important, yet potentially vulnerable to the loss of animal species. Analysis of the surface microbiome from 74 taxa, including teleost fishes, hard and soft corals, crustaceans, echinoderms,... |

Four new genera, Rhytisma, Klyxum and Skamnarium (family Alcyoniidae) and Sansibia (family Xeniidae), are proposed to accommodate a number of species wrongly assigned to some established genera. A large number of the species concerned have been previously included in the genus Alcyonium, and remarks are made concerning the heterogenous nature of that genus. The reassignment of Parerythropodium hicksoni Utinomi, 1972, to Erythropodium, Alcyonium gracillimum Kükenthal, 1906, to Scleronephthya, and Clavularia hamra to Briareum is also discussed, and the existence of Funginus Tixier-Durivault, 1987, as a replacement name for Fungulus Tixier-Durivault, 1970, is highlighted. |

Four new species of Alcyonium are described and figured: Alcyonium compactofestucum from the east coast of South Africa, A. rudyi from the west coast of the United States, A. senegalense from Senegal and A. spitzbergense from Spitzbeigen. A. antarcticum Wright & Studer, 1889, A. gruveli TixierDurivault, 1955, A. monodi Tixier-Durivault, 1955, A. patagonicum (May, 1899) and A. sollasi Wright & Studer, 1889, are redescribed and figured. A. paessleri May, 1899, is synonymized with A. antarcticum Wright & Studer, 1889. |
